What is a high-speed optocoupler?
High speed optocoupler is an infrared optical device widely used in high-speed digital and analog signal transmission systems.
A high-speed optocoupler is an electronic component that contains two independent electronic and optical components. As the core components of fiber optic communication and computer networks, they undertake the task of converting electrical signals into optical signals and transmitting them. High speed optocouplers can achieve fast response and high-precision transmission, with speeds reaching the Gbps level. Compared to traditional electrical transmission, high-speed optocouplers can provide a more efficient transmission method with lower loss and higher data quality.
Composition of high-speed optocoupler
High speed optocouplers are usually composed of light-emitting diodes, photodiodes, and lenses.
The working principle of high-speed optocoupler
The infrared light emitted by the light-emitting diode is converged onto the photodiode through a lens, thereby generating an electrical signal. When the LED receives an electrical signal, it converts the signal into an optical signal and sends it to the photodetector for reception and decoding. In the process of signal transmission, high-speed optocouplers can carry more information, have higher data density, and smaller time delay. At the same time, high-speed optocouplers also have good isolation performance, which can effectively weaken environmental interference signals and make data transmission more reliable.

Function of high-speed optocoupler:
1. In switch circuits, good electrical isolation is often required between the control circuit and the switch, which is very difficult for general electronic switches, but it is easy to achieve with it, so 6n137 has
electrical isolation function.
2. Used for bistable output circuits: It can effectively solve the problem of output and load isolation, as the light-emitting diode can be connected in series with two emitting circuits.
3. Due to its superior anti-interference and isolation performance compared to transistors, it forms various logic circuits, making them more reliable.
4. Applied to digital circuits: can amplify pulse signals.
5. Applied to high-voltage control: replacing transformers, replacing contact relays and contact relay A/D in various situations, such as circuits.
How to distinguish between high-speed optocouplers and ordinary optocouplers
In fact, the structure of high-speed optocouplers is different from that of ordinary optocouplers. The structure of high-speed optocouplers
is a photodiode+amplification drive circuit, while the structure of ordinary optocouplers is a phototransistor (+amplification drive circuit). The response speed (rise and fall time) of a photodiode is in the nanosecond range, while the response speed (rise and fall time) of a phototransistor is in the microsecond range. It's not that a regular optocoupler can operate at high speed in the linear region, its inherent response time is limited, and it can't even speed up if it wants to.
In addition, if a regular optocoupler operates in the linear region, it will also be limited by the parameter Fc (Cut off Frequency). The Fc of a regular optocoupler is basically around 50KHz (under test conditions of VCC=5V, IC=5ma, RL=100R, increasing RL will make Fc smaller, and when RL=1K, Fc will be around 10KHz). For example, TLP521 has Fc around 50KHz, PC817 has Fc around 80KHz, CNY117 has Fc around 250KHz.
