Optocoupler
Generally, the volume is small and compact. The optocoupler consists of an LED on the input side and a photodetector on the output side, which are packaged together. It adopts semiconductor integration technology, and many optocouplers exist in the form of chips, which are widely used in circuit boards. Especially in highly integrated electronic devices, in order to meet the demand for miniaturization, the design size of optocouplers will be as small as possible to save space. For example, high-speed optocouplers, patch optocouplers, etc., their volume can be made very small, like some surface mount optocouplers, which can adapt to high-density circuit board assembly.
relay
There is a significant difference in volume. Traditional electromagnetic relays, due to their mechanical structures and contacts such as coils and armatures, especially high-power electromagnetic relays, are designed with heavy mechanical components and insulation structures to withstand high voltages and currents, resulting in a generally larger overall volume. However, in recent years, with the development of technology, many miniaturized and even ultra small relay products have emerged, such as some small signal relays used for internal control circuits of electronic devices. They are gradually approaching optocouplers in size, but overall, under the same application power or functional level, the volume of electromagnetic relays may still be larger than optocouplers. The optocoupler relay adopts optoelectronic coupling technology to isolate the input circuit and output circuit. The input and output parts use semiconductor devices, which are smaller in size and lighter in weight.
When choosing between optocouplers or relays in practical applications, volume is one of the factors to consider. In some space demanding scenarios such as portable electronic devices, dense circuit boards, etc., optocouplers are generally the better choice if you want to save space; For some environments with less strict volume requirements but requiring high-power control, although relays may have a larger volume, they can meet their functional requirements
